Falls, sprains, and broken glasses.. oh, and voting too
Yesterday was a lousy day for the most part. Started out innocent enough, watching the election on TV and getting ready to go vote. Got everything ready and went to help dad out to the car and things went quickly downhill from there.
I had thought that the ice outside had been cleared away using ice melt stuff and sand… turns out that the stuff had kitty litter sprinkled on it. Clumping kitty litter. That is NOT a good thing. For those of you that don’t know, let me explain what that means. Clumping kitty litter is made from clay, this makes it clump together when the stuff gets wet. When it gets wet enough it causes it to besome a muddy clay. A very slippery muddy clay. That is not a good thing to have on top of slipery ice on a walkway. I stepped down off the porch, dad followed me down… I sae his weaker foot start to slipand tried to get my foot over there to brace it only to find that the seemingly solid looking dirt was in fact very wet clumping kitty litter. Over very slippery ice. My foot had no traction as his went into it, thus we both lost one of our legs to the slip, both of those legs, of course, went right into my good leg. Me and dad went down – hard.
I tried to brace him as much as I could, but it was useless. He threw his good arm around, bracing from hitting his head on the planter beside the porch, but his hand caught on the planter and screwed up his thumb. Could have been a lot worse, could have been his head hit the thing. We got him up and sitting on the porch steps. Discussed injuries and how he was doing and he said he thought he broke his thumb. Not good. I asked if he wanted to go to the ER, get it x-rayed and he said yes… but after we went and voted. ::shaking head::
So, off we went to our local polling place, did our deed as voters, and then we went to get the thumb checked out. X-rays did not show any breaks, but the guy was concerned about torn ligaments, so he referred us to a specialist guy and put it in a brace. Some funky fiberglass deal that they got wet and formed to the side of his arm, then wrapped Ace bandages around. Told me if it gets wet again it will turn to mush, keep it dry.
I called the referred to doctor a little while ago and his receptionist said he’s booked solid all week and they are not accepting new patients at this time, she’s getting dad’s stuff from ER anyway to take a look at it and will call me back tomorrow. I then called my dad’s regular doctor to let her know what’s up, her receptionist is going to let her know about this.
Oh, and the glasses… I woke up this morning to discover my glasses on the floor – one of the dogs had got ahold of them and chewed them up for me. Main damage is both of the pads that cusion the nose were chewed off, so I need to get the things to replace those. Really really annoys me. As I write this I have thin strips of Kleenex cusioning the metal prongs so they don’t poke me in the nose. It’s not working. Hurts to wear glasses.
