Hippocratic Oath

I was idly looking at the “latest headlines” RSS feed in my Firefox browser a little while ago when I saw a feed title “Hippocratic Oath“.  That caught my attention enough to prompt me to follow the link and discover just what it is all about – turns out, it is all about the Hippocratic Oath.

I had been expecting something about some doctor that had failed to stand by the hippocratic oath, or an article about how it is taken by all doctors with no real details about what exactly it is, instead I found an article that looks at the hippocratic oath as it was written over 2,000 years ago and as it pertains to doctors today.

Written by Dr. Daniel Sokol, a medical ethicist, the articlelooks at some of the key points of the hippocratic oath that have been questioned and offers an explenation for how they might have been intended at the time the oath was written.  Passages include one that has been quoted in how a doctor should view abortions and one which has been interpreted as forbidding surgery.
